- Highlights of Italy’s National Energy and Climate Plan 2030
Italy’s National Energy and Climate Plan 2030 is an ambitious roadmap designed to overhaul the country’s energy landscape and push it towards a more sustainable future. Below is a quick look at the plan’s targets and how the country aims to meet them.
Tackling the challenges of climate change and dependence on fossil fuels, this plan aims to achieve Italy’s energy transition by 2030 and is aligned with EU guidelines, setting a mid-term target on its way to zero net emissions by 2050.
● Promote individual and collective self-consumption.
● Promote renewable energy communities.
● Competitive tenders for large plants (+1 MW).
● Promotion of PPAs or long-term energy contracts.
● Implement ad hoc tools based on innovative technologies for new plants.
● Use small islands as research laboratories to promote high levels of renewable energy penetration and electrification of consumption.
● Better guarantees of origin of renewable sources.
● Regulations that better favour revamping and repowering existing renewable energy plants.
● Tax deductions for energy requalification and renovating building stock.
● Promote white certificates (negotiable energy efficiency certificates that certify that a certain amount of energy savings has been achieved).
● Mandate for renewable energy systems in buildings.
● Financial support to municipalities for investment in energy efficiency and sustainable territorial development.
Along with other EU Member States, Italy submitted a revised strategy for 2030 in June 2023, updating its targets compared to the ones set in 2019. The plan is binding following approval by the European Commission.
Italy’s National Energy and Climate Plan 2030 marks a major milestone in the country’s energy transition. Vector Renewables will be working hand in hand with major stakeholders to support this energy transition and drive the shift to renewables forward.
