Wind measurement campaigns are the backbone of wind farm development, yet they are notoriously complex due to the intersection of harsh environments, logistical hurdles, and high precision requirements.

Data acquisition in these campaigns generally relies on either physical meteorological masts (Met Masts) or Remote Sensing Devices like LiDAR or SoDAR.

The typical challenges

Connectivity and Power Supply

  • Dead zones: many campaigns occur in areas where infrastructure is non-existent.
  • Autonomous power: systems often rely on solar panels and battery banks. During winter months with low solar radiation, the data acquisition system may shut down, leading to critical data gaps that can invalidate a campaign for financing purposes.
  • Data backhaul: If cellular coverage is poor, retrieving data in real-time is impossible. Relying on manual SD card collection increases the risk that a sensor failure remains undetected for weeks.

Data Integrity and Filtering

  • Cleaning "Non-Representative" Data: analysts must filter out data points affected by bird interference, nearby construction, or temporary obstacles.
  • Data Recovery Rates: most financial institutions require a 90% or higher data recovery rate. Managing the "missingness" of data,and deciding how to "gap-fill" using nearby long-term reference stations, is one of the most contentious aspects of wind resource assessment.
